Last spring, I wrote a
4,500-word cover story for the April issue of Boston magazine titled, “The Terrifyingly Nasty, Backstabbing,& Altogether Miserable World of the Suburban Mom." The article was about mean mom cliques in the suburbs, and it resonated
immediately with readers.
Why did it hit such a
nerve? Because I shared a dirty little secret of suburban living: that mean-mom behavior—cliques, exclusion,
backstabbing, and bullying—is rampant in the suburbs of every major city, and
no one wants to talk about it. The mean moms, of course, rallied immediately
and denied this kind of behavior exists. Others dismissed it as “first-world
problems.” And still others questioned my self-esteem: “Clearly someone didn't
sit next to her in the cafeteria at grade school and the effects are
lingering…Get some therapy.” Yet the overwhelming majority were resounding
hallelujahs, like “Holy Crap,
lady….I just read your piece about the evil world of suburban moms and I swear
you've had camera crews following my life.”
Read it for yourself, and let me know what you think.
